As my interest in birding has grown, I thought I would see if there are any birding organizations in the local community. This led me to the South Bend Audubon Society, and this trip to Bonneville Mill is the first official birding trip I’ve ever gone on with this group. So exciting!
We saw cryptically-colored ☆Brown Creeper☆, and several ☆Northern Rough-winged Swallow☆ swooping over the swampy area in the south part of the park. ☆Red-winged Blackbird☆ were seen and heard in the marsh to the west of the large meadowy hills, and I heard numerous ☆Field Sparrow☆ singing in the north meadows. With the help of Marge, a fellow Auduboner and very experienced birder, I was soon able to identify the cheerful and distinctive song of the ☆Song Sparrow☆. There were also some very bold Mallard who came close, probably hoping for a hand-out. (Sadly, I wasn’t able to gratify their requests).
Species List
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos), Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla), Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (Stelgidopteryx serripennis serripennis), Brown Creeper (Certhia americana), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)
Let me know what you think!
