Chaetura pelagica
April 16, 1993: Goshen, Elkhart County, IN
I saw several of these flying over a barn while walking through a farm neighborhood in Goshen. Very cute. I’ve since seen them all over the place, especially in the middle of cities, where I don’t expect much in the way of bird life!

Another new development – these birds have taken up residence in the chimney! How exciting! As it turns out, they are making a bit of noise at night, but nothing too bothersome. I am thrilled about sharing our home with these precious little birds, especially since they don’t have as much habitat as they once did.

There were lots of swifts at the Castillo de San Marcos (old Spanish fort) in St. Augustine, where they were living and nesting in the walls of the fort. While we were up on the walls of the fort, it was fun to watch the swifts zooming around the inner courtyard at our eye level.
