Meleagris gallopavo
July 24, 1994: DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, Harrison County, IA
(Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) Saw a family of these interesting birds – adults and several juveniles – as they crossed a dirt road in front of me within the park. I got out of my car and was able to few them for a couple of minutes before they moved into the woods.

July 4, 1998 Shenandoah NP-Lewis Mountain, VA
(Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) Saw a family of turkey cross the road in front of us as we were driving in the car. We tried to figure out which way they had gone and follow them, but were unable to locate them again. Still, they were fun to see, if only for a moment. Very elusive, at least in my experience. You wouldn’t think birds so large could be so sneaky.
April 29, 2007: Canyon Green, San Ramon, CA
(Meleagris gallopavo intermedia)These birds are common visitors to our neighborhood and home. They are often foraging in both our front and back yards. One afternoon, from inside the house I heard them vocalizing I looked out on the back patio, but didn’t see any birds. So, I peeked out the front door . . . still no birds. But I could still hear the vocalizations. Curious, I went out back again, and looked up to see that there was a turkey on our ROOF, two stories up. (This was not the last time this happened).

April 20, 2010: Laguna Uplands Preserve, Sonoma County, CA
(Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) This flock of turkeys was quite entertaining. I gobbled them to get them to call back to me when we first arrived at the park and after that, it appeared as though everywhere we went they were following us. I got some really great views (and excellent photographs). Lots of fun.

June 2, 2022: Bodega Marine Lab, Sonoma County, CA
The turkey from the previous night was back (or maybe a different bird, but I tend to think it was the same individual). While I was watching, she flew up into one of the nearby trees. What a sight!
