This was a fun animal to see! I’d been looking for small fish in the pools, and finally spotted this one briefly, before it swam back into hiding. My assumption was that it would be a sculpin, but I wasn’t able to get another good look at it. Fortunately, the fish was in one of my photos of the shore crab, so I actually had a reasonably good photo! I had also taken a short video, and even though I couldn’t see what I was filming at the time (due to the angle of the light), I caught this little friend on video, as well. Very cute.

I took a solo late-afternoon walk to the small spring-fed pond where this population of fish lives. There were several fish in the pond, ranging in size from about 1.5” to 6” in length. It was difficult to see details because of reflections on the water, but they were thin, basically fusiform fish with a reddish tinge.

Derek Girman led us on a walk to the pond to make sure the entire class was able to view the chubs.

I looked for these fish in both Lake Tuendae and in the spring-fed pool, but was unable to locate any of them. The pool has been fenced in since my first visit, which is probably good for protecting the fishes, but it greatly reduced the visibility into the water. I hope the fish are still there.
Let me know what you think!
