Fairfield Osborn Preserve with Science 120

February 24, 2018
1100 – 1330

This was a Watershed Year (Science 120) field trip, to practice collecting various types of environmental data. I didn’t see a lot of wildlife, but I did get some nice pictures of flora.

Species List

  • California Blackberry (Rubus ursinus)
  • Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia)
  • Lace Lichen (Ramalina menziesii)
  • Coyote Brush (Baccharis pilularis)
  • Soft Rush (Juncus effusus)
  • Arroyo Willow (Salix lasiolepis)
  • Pacific Poison Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum)
  • California Bay (Umbellularia californica)
  • Wavy-leafed Soap Plant (Chlorogalum pomeridianum)
  • Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
  • Carnivorans (Carnivora) Found near the barn/shed area. Maybe a canid? In which case, it would probably be coyote. Domestic dogs aren’t allowed on the preserve.
  • Carnivorans (Carnivora) Found near the barn/shed area. Quite a bit smaller than the first scat I found. Maybe Striped Skunk?
  • Tree Germander (Teucrium fruticans)
  • Common Daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) I assume that these were planted intentionally at some point in the past (probably decades ago).
  • Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus)
  • Great Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)
  • Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus armeniacus)
  • Olive (Olea europaea) Another species that must have been intentionally planted here, decades ago.
  • Spreading Rush (Juncus patens)
  • Goldback Fern (Pentagramma triangularis)
  • Western Black-legged Tick (Ixodes pacificus) Found on my pant leg. Really small – body not much bigger than the head of a pin.
  • Pacific Hound’s Tongue (Adelinia grandis)
  • Columbian Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) Seen on the drive home.

Let me know what you think!
